Catholic Church has immense contribution in the education sector of Bangladesh. Among the 8 dioceses in Bangladesh Chittagong Archdiocese alone runs 5 high school, 4 Junior School, 4 primary school, 4 Kindergarten schools, 3 free primary school and more than 80 village primary schools in the Chittagong hill tracts. Not only in the city areas but Chittagong Archdiocese has reached the most remote areas in the Chittagong Hill Tracts with the light of education. Places like Thanchi, Alikadam, Lama is the most diverse areas of Bangladesh where education institutions are very rare to found.
Within this reality Chittagong Archdiocese has launched another school in Alikadam for the local children who can not afford to go to the cities for higher education. The school is named St. Mary’s School Alikadam. Initially class 6 and 7 are introduced with a long term planning of a high school. Holy Cross Brothers took the responsibility of the school. Bro. Ronjon Purificatin, csc is the 1st headmaster of the school. Another holy cross brother will be joining him soon. Two teachers is appointed and almost 250 students have enlisted until now.
On Wednesday, 9 January 2018 official activities of the school was started through distributing books among the enlisted students. There were also present UP chairman, parish priest of Alikadam parish and some local leaders.
