Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.

Pope Francis was admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Hospital on February 14, 2025, with bronchitis, which worsened into bilateral pneumonia by February 18. After 38 days in hospital, he returned to Casa Santa Marta to continue his recovery. The 88-year-old Pontiff had long struggled with respiratory issues, having lost part of a lung in his youth and frequently battling infections. In November 2023, he canceled a trip to the UAE due to lung inflammation. In April 2024, he approved an updated liturgical book for papal funerals, which will guide his own funeral Mass, yet to be announced.
