The 6th World Grandparents Day – 2026 was solemnly observed across the Catholic Archdiocese of Chattogram with prayerful celebrations, special Holy Masses, and programs honouring senior members of the Church. This year’s celebration was inspired by the theme, “I Will Never Forget You” (Isaiah 49:15), reminding the faithful of God’s unfailing love and the invaluable dignity of grandparents and elderly persons in the family, the Church, and society.
To mark the occasion, all parishes of the Archdiocese celebrated special Holy Masses dedicated to grandparents and elderly parishioners on 26 July 2026. During the Eucharistic celebrations, priests offered special prayers, asking God to bless the elderly with good health, strength, peace, and many more years of fruitful life. The faithful also expressed their gratitude for the lifelong witness of faith, sacrifice, and service that older generations continue to offer to their families and the Church.
In his homily, the celebrant emphasized that grandparents and elderly people are not merely guardians of family traditions but living witnesses of faith who pass on Christian values, wisdom, and hope to younger generations. Echoing Pope Leo XIV’s message for this year’s observance, the congregation was encouraged to recognize, respect, and accompany the elderly with love, ensuring that they remain active and valued members of the Christian community.
Following the Holy Mass, parish communities warmly honoured their elderly members by presenting them with flowers as a symbol of love, gratitude, and appreciation. Many parishes also arranged fellowship gatherings where grandparents and elderly parishioners shared their inspiring life stories, experiences of faith, and words of encouragement with younger members of the community. Their testimonies highlighted the importance of perseverance, family unity, prayer, and unwavering trust in God throughout life’s journey.
The celebration concluded in an atmosphere of joy, thanksgiving, and intergenerational solidarity. It served as a meaningful reminder that the elderly are a precious blessing to the Church and society. Through this observance, the Catholic Archdiocese of Chattogram reaffirmed its commitment to honouring, caring for, and walking alongside grandparents and elderly persons, recognizing them as treasured bearers of faith, wisdom, and hope for future generations.
