Chattogram, October 24, 2025: The newly constructed Nirmala Maria Church at Asambasti, under the Rangamati Parish of the Chattogram Catholic Archdiocese, was solemnly inaugurated and blessed in a grand ceremony.

The inauguration and the Holy Eucharistic celebration were presided over by Most Rev. Lawrence Subrato Howlader, CSC, Archbishop of Chattogram Metropolitan. Among those present were Fr. Terence Rodrigues, Vicar General of the Archdiocese; Fr. Michael Roy, Parish Priest of Rangamati; Fr. Gorden Dias; Fr. Joy Joseph Quiah; and several other priests.

In his homily, Archbishop Subrato Lawrence Howlader stated, “This holy church is a reflection of the temple of our hearts. Here we nurture our good intentions and work for the welfare of others. This church stands as a sign of unity, bringing together the faithful of this parish in collective prayer and fellowship.”

Parish Priest Fr. Michael Roy remarked, “This church is a remarkable example of a synodal community. Along with the support from donor organizations, the enthusiasm and active participation of the local people played a crucial role in the establishment of this church.”

It is noteworthy that nearly one-tenth of Bangladesh’s land area consists of the Chattogram Hill Tracts. Alongside various indigenous communities, the “Assam community,” originating from the Indian state of Assam, has long been residing in the Rangamati region. Their settlement, locally known as Asambasti, bears witness to their enduring presence and cultural heritage.

More than 300 faithful, including several sisters, participated in the Holy Eucharist and blessing ceremony. The celebration drew participants not only from Rangamati Parish but also from various other parishes within the Chattogram Archdiocese. At the conclusion of the event, the distinguished guests unveiled a special commemorative publication, marking the inauguration of the new church.

The ceremony, filled with spiritual devotion, joyful unity, and heartfelt participation from the local community, transformed the inauguration of the Nirmola Maria Church into a truly memorable and sacred occasion.
